A majority of abusive parents were abused as children. As a result, a single incident of abuse can spread like cancer to countless lives over many generations. The CAP Center Parent Aide Program is designed to break the generational cycle of abuse and neglect of children.
Because each case of child neglect or abuse is different, one-on-one home-visiting programs are the most effective way of changing behaviors and attitudes. With the Parent Aide Program, case managers and, when appropriate, volunteers work with families in their homes, directly addressing the issues faced by each family. Nationally, the Parent Aide Program has an 80% success rate, ensuring these families do not return to the system.
How it works:
When a family is referred to the CAP Center, a Case Manager meets with the family to determine their interest and eligibility for the program. After a thorough assessment, that same Case Manager then determines if the family is appropriate to match with a volunteer. If the family is appropriate, the Case Manager accompanies the assigned volunteer Parent Aide on an introductory visit. The professionaly trained Case Manager supports the Parent Aide with specific recommenations for the family along with ongoing supervision through weekly conversations.
The Case Manager or Parent Aide volunteer visits the family at least once each week for up to a year, spending up to two hours per visit. The Case Manager or Parent Aide volunteer works on developing a relationship with and providing information to the parent(s) about appropriate methods of discipline, child development and other areas of need. The Case Manager or Parent Aide volunteer becomes a mentor and a source of support to the parent(s).
As the family gains a level of trust with the Case Manager or Parent Aide volunteer, the parents learn how to work with and nurture their children appropriately. The Case Manager or Parent Aide volunteer can also offer information and assistance to the family on receiving social service programs, making doctor's appointments, finding good housing, and other areas of concern to parents.
